Eric Freifeld Poster – Signed by the artist This is a poster that features the Russian/Canadian artist Eric Freifeld in a self-portrait that dates from 1965. It is signed in blue ink by the artist, “To Barbara with best wishes, Eric Freifeld”. I am the original owner, having attended the 1969 exhibition of his works at the Hamilton Art Gallery. The poster is mounted on a mid weight black cardboard and measures 29 x 21 inches. It is in excellent condition with very minimal wear at some corners and a few tiny white spots in the uppermost right hand corner of the blue area. Freifeld was born in the U.S.S.R., Saratov in 1919 and died in Toronto, Ontario in 1984. Many Canadian artists had the privilege of studying with him when he was appointed to the position of figure drawing and watercolour instructor at the Ontario College of Art in 1946. Prior to this he had taught evening classes at the Vancouver School of Art. He became especially known for his intricate paintings of abandoned exteriors and interiors – work that would consume some 30 years of his active career. Some 25 one-man exhibitions took place in Freifeld's lifetime. His awards include five from the Canada Council, and his works are represented in collections of Brook Street Galleries, London, England; The Montreal Museum of Arts, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, the University of Toronto's Hart House, Vancouver Art Gallery, the Arthur Benjamin Collection, and private collections in Canada, England, United States, Israel, Australia, France, Switzerland, Austria and Ireland. Nevertheless, Eric Freifeld's life was plagued by bouts of deep depression. In September 1984, at the age of 65, he took his own life. In 1986, a posthumous retrospective exhibition was held in two successive galleries: the Rodman Hall Arts Centre, St.Catharines, and the Art Gallery of Ontario. The exhibition was curated by the late Peter Harris, one of Freifeld's former students. Eric Freifeld is also the subject of an extensive and well-illustrated monograph by the noted critic Paul Duval (Eric Freifeld, Paul Duval, The Yaneff Gallery, Toronto, London, 1977). $20. Buyer must pick up in Aurora. Please phone 905-727-4395, your email may end up in the spam file by mistake. Thanks for looking!
